Settle-Focus-Untangle-Purify
August 9 @ 3:00 pm – August 14 @ 1:00 pm

This is a silent retreat with alternate periods of sitting and walking.
Awareness can soften the heart.
This retreat will be a function of primary settling, collecting, one pointed un-scattered direction.
Once the heart-mind settles, this process goes towards ease and relaxation. The nature of Vipassana is that it begins to untangle the emotional complexity that we have generated due to our conditioning.
Purification is the natural consequence of clearing the heart.
Sentha Sivabalan is replacing John Travis as the teacher this summer.

On Thursday, June 4, John suffered a stroke and will not be able to teach this retreat. For more information on his condition click here.

We are delighted to introduce Sentha to our Theravada meditation group to teach this Vipassana retreat. Her extensive practice, deep study of the Buddhist path, and nuanced understanding of lineage differences will greatly enrich our collective grasp of The Practice. In this retreat, Sentha will teach from the Theravada perspective, highlighting the specific tools that yield the most transformative results. She brings a familiarity with the Theravada tradition to these ancient texts, as well as nuanced understanding drawn from Chan and Tibetan Buddhism. While Theravada preserves the early teachings in the Pali Nikayas, Chan and Tibetan Buddhism pull out and emphasize aspects of the Dharma already present in the Nikayas. Chan is grounded in the Agamas, the Sanskrit version of the Nikayas currently only preserved in Chinese. Because all these traditions share the core accounts of the historical Buddha’s life and fundamental doctrines, Sentha’s expertise offers a unique, comparative depth to our study.
About Sentha
Sentha has over 20 years of experience in studying, practicing and teaching meditation in all three current streams of Buddhism: Chan (Chinese precursor to Zen) Buddhism with Gilbert Gutierrez, Tibetan and Theravada Buddhism with Marvin Treiger. Both of her teachers have authorized and encouraged her to teach.
Marv says about Sentha:“Sentha is that rare combination of loving Grace & Precision—Wisdom that informs and inspires the student towards their best. Miss her teachings and you’ve really missed something.” Kadak Pawo
Sentha’s teaching style invites and evokes direct experience of what is being taught, so that you can ehipassiko, come and see for yourself. She teaches the buddhayana (Buddha Vehicle) / ekayana (One Vehicle) in the syncretic spirit of Early Chan.
Just like the ancient Silk Road facilitated all previous streams of Buddhist teachings to come together, be integrated and presented in the most relevant way to what is called for, Sentha weaves together the strands made available through our golden information era to present the Dharma in a way that awakens students to what is.
Hailing from India, Sentha brings to her teaching an invaluable awareness of the nuances of Indic language terms and customs as they present in the Dharma. She has a particular skill for translating old texts and elaborating on existing translations in a way that brings profound depth to the material.
Sentha is keenly interested in secular ways of presenting the Dharma, both to reach new audiences who may benefit, as well as to reach Dharmic practitioners in new and natural ways that deepen their practice. She has taught five year-long courses in Compassionate Communication and Presence, based on Non-Violent Communication. Her interest, understanding, and study of trauma resilience informs her approach to teaching. Sentha also has training in Inner Relationship Focusing, an embodied way of being with whatever comes up in our experiencing, just as it is, that allows it to dissolve and resolve. Her practice is honed by the journey of motherhood where the rubber meets the road for her in the application of the Dharma.
The Brahmaviharas are central to Sentha’s teachings. In the way she teaches resourcing for them, she finds parallels and inspiration from Ajahn Brahm.
Sentha is committed to meeting and honoring students where they are to point out what is intrinsically and already present. For more info visit mudlotus.org

DANA FOR OUR TEACHERS
In the Buddhist tradition, the teachings are considered priceless and are offered freely. The practice of dana (generosity) allows us to express our gratitude and support the teachers who share these invaluable teachings. At the the conclusion of the retreat, you will have the opportunity to offer dana (donations) directly to the teachers and their retreat managers. By offering dana, you participate in a powerful practice of giving, which is considered a key step toward freedom. We also welcome volunteers to assist with setup before the retreat and cleanup afterward, as these acts of service are also expressions of generosity and are deeply appreciated.
DANA FOR DZIMC
Dana will be gratefully accepted by Dharma Zephyr Insight Meditation Community to support our operating costs and scholarship fund. You can make an online donation by pressing the yellow “DONATE” button at the top of the home page.
Health: In the spirit of loving kindness and ethical behavior, Dharma Zephyr will comply with public health guidance. To care for all who attend our events, we ask that if you are sick (cold, cough, sore throat, runny nose, etc.) or have had a fever, vomiting or diarrhea in the 24 hours prior to an event, that you not attend the event. In addition, for the safety and well being of our community, Dharma Zephyr strongly encourages, but does not require, that participants at our activities and events be vaccinated and boosted for infectious diseases.
