Five Things Which Wake Us Up!: A Daylong Meditation Retreat with Heather Sundberg

September 24, 2017 ·

Heather Sunderburg

Wise Friends – Celebrating Integrity – Hearing the Dharma (truth) – Wise Effort – Harmony with Impermanence

At this daylong we will deeply explore these Five Marvelous Qualities that both ‘wake us up’ and also serve as markers of our continuing awakening on the spiritual path.  Through stories, guided meditations, teachings, silent sitting and walking meditation practice, and optional qi gong movement practice, we will reveal, taste, and cultivate each of these qualities, discovering what they mean to us in our lives.

There will be a potluck dinner immediately following the retreat at a private home in Carson City. If you would like to attend, please bring a dish to share. The location will be announced at the retreat; if you are not attending the retreat, please email Kathy for location.

From Effort To Ease: A Daylong Meditation Retreat with John Travis

September 24, 2017 ·

The Buddha emphasized over and over that it takes effort to follow the path of the Dharma. Yet, the ultimate result is about the nature of ease.

We use effort to see into the nature of a fearful and restless Mind/Heart. Then, using the fundamentals of insight – relaxing into the deepest recesses of our psyche – diminishing the power of anxiousness and dis-ease. Ultimately we find our own good heart and relaxed mind.

The day will be a continuation of yesterday emphasizing the simple discipline of walking and sitting.  Resting with a good heart and unruffled mind.  Seeing that when there is great ease there is also effortless freedom.

This retreat is suitable for beginning and experienced meditators.

John Travis

John Travis has been a student of meditation since 1969. He undertook Senior Teacher Training with Jack Kornfield at Spirit Rock Meditation Center. After completion of his training he was ordained and given Dharma transmission in the vipassana tradition of Mahasi Sayadaw and Achaan Chaa, and authorized to teach vipassana.

John co-founded Mountain Stream Meditation Center at Nevada City, CA and continues to be the resident teacher. In addition, he is a senior teacher for Spirit Rock Meditation Center. He travels extensively, leading retreats all over the United States. www.johntravis.org

There is no charge for the retreat. The teaching of the Buddha are considered priceless and are offered freely. There will be an opportunity for the practice of generosity, (Dana), by offering donations to support the teacher and to Dharma Zephyr for covering the costs of presenting the retreat.

3-Night Residential Retreat with Amita Schmidt & Kathy Schwerin at Lake Tahoe: “The Connected Heart”

September 24, 2017 ·

Though our world is more connected than ever in some ways, we still experience a connection deficit with ourselves and others. We can retreat into a sense of helplessness, anger, or despair in the face of the suffering we witness, feeling overwhelmed. Yet a connected heart is not anxious in the face of suffering. A connected heart is wise and flexible, reverent and open. A connected heart is a relationship to life.

This retreat will offer you time, space, and practices to experience the journey of creating a more connected heart for yourself and for the world. Through sitting and walking, silence, movement, nature, and the practices of inquiry, lovingkindness, and awareness, we will be cultivating the connected heart together. Come join us in this healing journey!

Daylong Meditation Retreat with Kathy Schwerin & Christy Tews: “Retreat from the Holidays”

September 24, 2017 ·

Offer Yourself a Day of Silence!
Return to your body, relax, and breath.

Community dharma leaders Kathy Schwerin and Christy Tews will offer techniques to use throughout the year to center, calm, and ground yourself. The day will be in silence except for instructions in sitting and walking meditation; dharma talks; and a question and answer period with the teachers.

Angela Sullivan, founder of Sun Mountain Yoga, will provide periods of gentle movement.

Prepare for comfort with loose, layered clothing. Bring a sack lunch and your cushion or bench if you wish to sit on the floor. Chairs are provided, but you are welcome to bring your own.

This retreat is especially suited for new meditators and a wonderful tune-up for those with experience.

This is a Dharma Zephyr Insight Meditation Community event. As such, there is no charge. Your generosity provides a donation to Sierra Foot and Ankle/Ascent Physical Therapy for use of the space and to support the teachers.

Kathy Schwerin and Christy Tews will co-lead this mindfulness meditation day, assisted by Angela Sullivan of Sun Mountain Yoga. Christy and Kathy are long-time friends who co-founded DZIMC. Christy enjoys gardening, cooking, traveling and embroidering with her miracle machine. Kathy is a semi-retired psychotherapist who blogs at A Mindful Breath.com.
