ReTreat from the Holidays 2023 in Carson City

November 15, 2022 ·

Offer yourself a day of silence!
Return to your body, relax, and breathe after the busy-ness of the holidays.

We will offer techniques to use throughout the day (and the coming year) to center, calm and ground yourself. The day will be in silence except for instructions in sitting and walking meditation, a dharma talk, and a question and answer period with the teachers.

This short daylong event is offered in person only.

Please prepare for comfort with layered clothing for outdoor walking meditations and indoor sitting and movement. Bring a sack lunch for a relaxed and silent meal, and your cushion or bench if you wish to sit on the floor. Chairs are provided (but do bring your own if you have one you especially like). Especially suited for new meditators, and a great tune-up and quiet day for experienced meditators.

This is a Dharma Zephyr Insight Meditation Community event. As such, there is no charge. Your generosity provides a donation to Sierra Foot & Ankle for the space and support for the teachers.

Kathy Schwerin, Christy Tews and Angela Sullivan will co-lead this mindfulness, movement and meditation day. Kathy, Christy and Angela are long-time practitioners and teachers, as well as friends. You may find Kathy’s and Christy’s full bios at dharmazephyr.org/about/who-we-are.  Angela Sullivan, founder of Sun Mountain Yoga, will provide periods of gentle movement.

We ask that you let us know you are coming to help us with planning.

To register or for questions contact Tom Gray, the retreat coordinator, at tom@dharmazephyr.org.

6-Week Meditation Class Series

November 25, 2019 ·

Thursdays, January 9 to February 13, 2020 at 4:00 – 5:30 pm,
Unity Church of the Sierra, Carson City, NV

This 6-week class will introduce attendees to the practice of sitting, walking, and eating meditation, and teach participants how to bring mindfulness to everyday life. Kathy and Tom will draw on what they’ve learned about meditation over years of evolving practice. Beginners and experienced meditators alike are welcome. There will be ample time for Q & A to begin or refine your practice. Core Buddhist concepts will also be explored. Some classes will include mindful movement. Preregistration is encouraged.

Tom Gray brings more than 15 years of practice to this class. He comes from a scientific perspective which is both a blessing and an obstacle; the practice has helped him to address anger and self-judgement issues. Kathy Schwerin began her practice almost 30 years ago. Everyday mindfulness has been her focus; her meditation practice has changed over the years and she is eager to share the many tools that have been helpful. Both of them have a deep love of the Buddhist dharma because it works!

There is no charge; donations gratefully accepted.

For more information or to preregister, please contact Tom@dharmazephyr.org.

3-Night Residential Retreat with Amita Schmidt & Kathy Schwerin at Lake Tahoe: “The Connected Heart”

September 24, 2017 ·

Though our world is more connected than ever in some ways, we still experience a connection deficit with ourselves and others. We can retreat into a sense of helplessness, anger, or despair in the face of the suffering we witness, feeling overwhelmed. Yet a connected heart is not anxious in the face of suffering. A connected heart is wise and flexible, reverent and open. A connected heart is a relationship to life.

This retreat will offer you time, space, and practices to experience the journey of creating a more connected heart for yourself and for the world. Through sitting and walking, silence, movement, nature, and the practices of inquiry, lovingkindness, and awareness, we will be cultivating the connected heart together. Come join us in this healing journey!
